Marine Research is a challenging field whose issues are tackled by expertise coming from different research sectors and with an overarching perspective. The main coordinating initiative at national level today is the RITMARE Flagship Programme, The Italian research for the sea, led by CNR and bringing together the experience of a wide audience of national stakeholders and research performing organizations. In this framework, the effort by DTA-CNR in spreading, transferring and improving marine research activities, is actually summarized in this milestone publication. The initial idea is due to Giuseppe Cavarretta, to whom I wish to express my heartfelt thanks for the initiative. Marine Research at CNR shows the potential of the DTA-CNR´s research network with activities ranging from marine biology to observational and operational oceanography, from Mediterranean Sea to the Arctic and Antarctic Seas, from technology engineering to policy support. Articles published in this book have been revised by a selected group of referees and are organized in eight different themes: Fishery and Sea Resources, Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning, Marine Ecology, Marine Geology, Observing Systems and Forecasting, Oceanography, Risks and Technologies. I wish to thanks scientists and referees who have been involved in the huge revision process and a special acknowledgement is also due to the editorial board members. Their valuable work allowed achieving the high quality of this book, which can be considered a comprehensive report of CNR marine activities and capacities. Last but not least, I would like to express my gratitude to the scientific and technical personnel in the Department of Earth and Environment and especially Daniela Beatrici, Paolo Braico, Margherita Cappelletto, Elisabetta Gallo, Luigi Mazari Villanova, and Pier Francesco Moretti for their support and effort to complete this publication. online survey on IPBES (International Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) |
|
|
IPBES announcement Our environment is under siege with unprecedented rates of biodiversity and ecosystem services loss never witnessed in recent history. We, as scientists are failing to arm policy-makers with the best information so they can weigh the consequences of their decisions. Meanwhile, although policy-making in climate change has been slow, we must admit that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has made a tremendous impact globally. The same cannot be said for biodiversity and ecosystem services. Official Site |
